What it is

A full floor system, built in layers

A paint chip floor, also called a flake floor, is a multi-layer epoxy system. We grind the concrete, lay down a base coat, broadcast colored vinyl chips into it while it is wet, then lock everything in with a clear topcoat.

The chips do a lot of work. They give the floor texture and grip, they hide dust and the little bits of gravel that ride in on your tires, and they let you pick a color blend that fits the space. The clear topcoat takes the daily abuse.

That is a long way from a store-bought epoxy kit. Kits are thin, usually go down over concrete that was only washed or etched, and are the reason so many garage floors end up peeling where the tires sit.

  • Built in layersPrimer, base coat, full chip broadcast, and clear topcoat.
  • Grip and textureChips add traction, even with snowmelt on the floor.
  • Hides the messThe chip pattern hides dust, sand, and small marks between cleanings.
  • Easy to cleanSweep, mop, or squeegee. Nothing soaks into the concrete.
  • Your colorsWe bring chip samples to the walkthrough so you can see them in your space.

Clear Topcoat

Seals the system in and takes the tires, tools, and daily traffic.

Paint Chip Broadcast

Vinyl chips broadcast into the wet base for color, texture, and grip.

Epoxy Base Coat

A seamless resin layer that holds the chips and gives the floor its strength.

Primer Coat

Bonds the system to the slab and helps block moisture coming up from below.

Ground Concrete

Diamond ground to open up the surface, with cracks repaired before anything goes down.

The system

Why prep decides how long it lasts

Most garage floor failures start at the slab. Hot tires can pull a coating right off concrete that was never ground. We grind every floor to open up the surface so the primer bites into the concrete, then build the system up one layer at a time.

Where it works

Garages, shops, and the rooms that take a beating

Chip floors fit anywhere you want a tough, good-looking floor that cleans up fast.

01

Home garages

The most common chip floor we install. Handles snowmelt, salt, and hot tires, and turns the garage into a finished space.

02

Shops

Stands up to tools, equipment, and spills, and makes dropped parts easy to find.

03

Basements

A clean, finished floor for gyms, storage, and bonus rooms over a bare slab.

04

Mudrooms and laundry

The rooms where boots, gear, and water come in all winter long.

05

Ski and gear rooms

Wet boots, skis, and bikes do not bother it. Squeegee the melt and move on.

06

Commercial spaces

Back-of-house, service bays, and warehouses. We are fully insured for commercial work.

Mountain tough

Made for Colorado garages

A garage in the Valley sees more water, salt, and grit in one winter than most see in years.

Snowmelt every day

Your car drags snow in all winter. On bare concrete that water soaks in, freezes, and breaks down the surface. A sealed chip floor keeps it on top where you can squeegee it out.

Mag chloride and road salt

The de-icers on mountain roads are hard on concrete. A chip floor keeps them from soaking into the slab and wipes clean when you rinse it.

Hot tire pickup

Tires coming off a warm road can lift a weak coating right off the floor. Ground prep and a full system are what keep a chip floor bonded where the tires sit.

Sand and grit

Sand and gravel get tracked in no matter what. The chip pattern hides it between cleanings, and the topcoat takes the scuffing.

Where we work

Chip floors from Aspen to Grand Junction

We install paint chip floors in garages and shops across western Colorado, from Aspen, Snowmass, and Basalt down through Carbondale and Glenwood Springs, over to Vail, and out to Grand Junction.

Because the work is indoors, chip floors are what our crew does through the cold months. Winter is a great time to get on the schedule.

Questions

Chip floor questions

Don’t see your question? Call 970-625-3800 and talk to the crew directly.

How much does a paint chip epoxy floor cost?

We price every floor after a free walkthrough. The main factors are square footage, the condition of the slab, how much crack repair and grinding it needs, whether an old coating has to come off, and the chip blend you choose. You get an itemized quote before anything is scheduled.

How long before I can park in the garage?

Foot traffic comes back well before vehicles do. Cure times depend on the products and the temperature in the space, so we give you exact times for walking on it and for parking on it before we leave.

Will it be slippery?

The chips add texture to the surface, which gives more grip than smooth epoxy or bare sealed concrete, even with snowmelt on it. If you want more grip, we can talk through options at the walkthrough.

Can it handle mag chloride and road salt?

A sealed chip floor keeps salt and mag chloride from soaking into bare concrete, which is where a lot of garage slab damage comes from. Rinse or squeegee the winter slush out now and then and the floor wipes clean.

Can you coat over my old garage coating?

Sometimes. If the old coating is peeling or poorly bonded, it has to come off first, or the new floor will fail along with it. We check the bond at the walkthrough and include any removal in the quote.

Do you install chip floors in the winter?

Yes. Chip floors are our cold-month specialty because the work happens indoors. When the outdoor overlay season ends, our crew moves into garages, shops, and basements across the Valley.

Do you do commercial chip floors?

We do. We are fully insured for commercial work and install chip floors in shops, warehouses, and back-of-house spaces as well as home garages.
