What it is

Natural stone, bonded to the slab you already have

An epoxy rock overlay is small, rounded river rock mixed with a clear epoxy binder, then spread and hand troweled over your existing concrete. Once it cures, the stones lock together into a tough, solid surface that looks like natural stone.

There is no cement between the stones, so the surface is porous. Rain and snowmelt soak down through the rock and run off along the slab underneath instead of sitting on top. That is a big deal on a mountain patio that sees snow on and off from October to May.

Because it goes over the concrete you have, there is no jackhammering, no hauling off old slab, and no waiting weeks for new concrete to cure. Your patio gets a new surface and keeps the foundation it already has.

Where it works

Built for the outdoor spaces you actually use

Rock overlays are our go-to for outdoor concrete in the Valley. These are the jobs we do most.

01

Patios

The most common job we do. Turn a gray slab into a finished outdoor living space without ripping it out.

02

Pool decks

Textured, drains fast, and comfortable to walk on when it is troweled smooth. A strong fit around pools.

03

Hot tub surrounds

Water runs through instead of pooling around the tub, and the surface keeps its grip when it is wet.

04

Walkways

Tie the path from the driveway to the door into one clean, natural-looking surface.

05

Front entries and porches

Make the first thing guests see look finished, with a surface that handles boots and snowmelt.

06

Steps and landings

Overlay steps to match the patio so the whole space reads as one project.

Mountain tough

Why it holds up at 8,000 feet

Aspen and the upper Valley are hard on outdoor concrete. Here is how a properly installed rock overlay deals with it.

Freeze-thaw cycles

Water that sits on and in concrete freezes, expands, and breaks the surface apart over time. A rock overlay lets water drain through and off instead of sitting on top, which takes away a lot of that damage.

High-altitude sun

UV is stronger up here, and ordinary indoor epoxy yellows in the sun. Outdoor overlays need a binder made for UV exposure so the stone keeps its color season after season.

Snow, ice, and boots

The stone texture gives grip that smooth concrete and sealed pavers do not. It handles daily foot traffic, patio furniture, and snow season without peeling like a paint or film coating can.

Prep comes first

Most overlay failures come from skipping prep. We clean the slab, repair cracks, and deal with problem spots before any rock goes down, so the overlay is bonded to sound concrete.

How we install it

From walkthrough to walk-on

No guesswork and no surprise line items. Here is how a rock overlay job goes with our crew.

  1. Walkthrough and slab check

We look at the concrete, the cracks, the slope, and where water goes, then talk through stone colors and edges.

  2. Itemized quote

You get a clear price, broken out line by line, before anything goes on the calendar.

  3. Prep the slab

We power wash, grind where it is needed, and repair cracks so the overlay bonds to clean, sound concrete.

  4. Mix, spread, and trowel

Rock and epoxy are mixed on site in small batches, spread to an even depth, and hand troweled smooth.

  5. Cure and enjoy

We tell you exactly when it is ready for foot traffic and furniture, and how to care for it through winter.

Your options

Rock overlay vs. tearing it out

If your patio looks rough but the slab is sound, you have choices. Here is how they stack up.

Where we work

Rock overlays from Aspen to Grand Junction

We have been working on concrete in western Colorado since 1982. Most of our rock overlay work is in Aspen, Snowmass, and down valley through Basalt, El Jebel, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs, and we travel to Vail and Grand Junction for the right job.

If you are in Aspen or anywhere up the Valley, we come to you for the walkthrough. You get a real look at your slab and a real price, not a guess over the phone.

Questions

Rock overlay questions

Don’t see your question? Call 970-625-3800 and talk to the crew directly.

How much does an epoxy rock overlay cost?

Every job is priced after a free walkthrough, because the number depends on the square footage, the shape of the space, how much crack repair the slab needs, steps and edges, and the stone color you pick. You get an itemized quote before anything goes on the calendar.

Can you put a rock overlay over cracked concrete?

Usually, yes. Stable hairline cracks and surface wear are fine once they are prepped. Cracks that are still moving or a slab that is heaving need to be repaired first, and we will tell you straight at the walkthrough if a slab is not a good candidate.

Does water drain through it?

Yes. There is no cement between the stones, so water runs down through the overlay and off along the slope of the slab underneath. It will not fix a patio that slopes the wrong way, but it keeps you up out of shallow puddles.

Is it slippery when it is wet or icy?

The stone texture gives good grip when wet, which is why people like it for pool decks and hot tub surrounds. No outdoor surface is ice proof, so you still want to clear snow and ice in winter.

How do I shovel it in the winter?

Use a plastic shovel or a broom and skip metal blades and ice choppers, which can scrape stones loose. Ask us about which ice melt products to use on your overlay.

When can you install a rock overlay?

Rock overlays are a warm-month job. The epoxy needs steady temperatures to cure right outdoors, so most installs happen from late spring through early fall. The calendar fills up fast, so it pays to get a walkthrough scheduled early.

Do you install rock overlays in Aspen?

Yes. We install rock overlays in Aspen, Snowmass Village, Basalt, El Jebel, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs, plus Vail and Grand Junction. Call or send the form and we will set up a time to come out.
